What You Can Claim
You can deduct most business expenses if they relate directly to earning your income. This includes:
- Operating Expenses: Daily running costs.
- Purchases: Products or services for your business.
- Capital Expenses: Depreciating assets like machinery and equipment.
Deduction Rules:
- Expenses must be for business, not private use.
- For mixed-use expenses, claim only the business portion.
- Keep records for proof.
You can’t claim GST if it’s claimable as a credit on your BAS. You can also deduct expenses for employee safety, such as PPE.
What You Can't Claim
Some expenses you can’t deduct include:
- Entertainment, unless it’s a fringe benefit
- Traffic fines
- Private or domestic costs (e.g., childcare, family clothes)
- Costs for non-assessable income
- Payments not meeting PAYG obligations
- GST if claimable as a credit on your BAS
You also can’t claim capital assets under capital gains tax rules, like land for business premises. Exceptions exist for capital works and some primary producer expenses. Deductions for personal services income (PSI) may be limited if PSI rules apply.
